What's a GMO?

There’s a lot of talk about GMOs these days.  GMO stands for genetically modified organism.  Scientists alter genes in a plant (in a lab) in order to add or delete desirable or undesirable characteristics, respectively.  For example, they may alter a protein to make a plant more resistant to drought or to increase the vitamin A content, as in “golden rice”.There seems to be a lot of fear surrounding GMO plants, when in reality, only 8 cops in the US are GMO.   They undergo very rigorous testing prior to going to market.  Below is an excellent article by nutrition guru Jane Brody that may dispel some of the myths around this technology and our food supply:http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/06/08/fears-not-facts-support-gmo-free-food/?ref=health&_r=0
