It’s football season! And that means more grilling and tailgate parties. Looking for ways to keep your end tight? Want healthier alternative to burgers and bratts this season? Think before you gobble gobble turkey products.For the most part, burgers and sausages made with turkey are lower in fat and sodium than their beef counterparts, but read the label before you toss them on the grill. If you’re making burgers from scratch, be sure to buy ground turkey that’s 90% lean or higher. Otherwise, your 85/15 turkey burgers contain the same fat content as traditional burgers made with 85/15 ground beef! Ground turkey breast (99% lean, 1% fat) is very low in fat, but makes a terribly dry burger. Turkey that is 93/7 lean to fat ratio contains about half the fat of 85/15, but still retains flavor and moisture.Go for 100% whole wheat buns over white buns. At least you’ll get some fiber and brands today are formulated to have a softer texture. If you’re watching calories, choose the 100 calorie “skinny buns”. These contain between 4-5 grams of filling fiber.To save a few calories on cocktails, choose light beer over traditional and be sure to drink at least a few bottles of water during the game to prevent dehydration (read HANGOVER the next day).Finally, try substituting lime flavored seltzer water for tonic water is also a great way to reduce calories in your cocktail. This saves close to 80 calories per drink and also reduces your exposure to artificial sweeteners. Higher alcohol content (in beer or liquor) means higher calories. Add a twist of lime and you’re all set!
