Holiday Feasts

As we wrap up the end of another year, many of us will toss our good eating habits aside as we indulge in all the holidays have to offer. Statistics show that the average American gains about a pound of weight per year, but those that are overweight tend to gain even more. While one pound may not sound significant, most of us don't drop those extra holiday pounds from year to year, which can lead to obesity over time. This year, don't be part of the 'fudge factor'. Aim to NOT gain this year. The tips below may help.

  1. Slow down and enjoy your food. The buffet table sets us up for an all you can eat affair. Savor your seasonal favorites, but don't feel obligated to sample everything.
  2. Drink more water. Don't drown yourself, but aim to drink at least 6 cups of PLAIN water a day. Dehydration leads to overeating and fatigue.
  3. Back off on booze. It's fine to enjoy a cocktail now and then, as long as it isn't daily. Just one drink a day ups your chance for several types of cancer and adds an extra 150-250 calories to your intake.
  4. Exercise. If there's one health tip that will never die, it's the recommendation to get moving. Take the stairs and burn 7 calories each minute. Stand on an elevator and burn one.
  5. Get enough sleep! Lack of sleep can lead to cravings for sweets. Aim to get 7-8 hours of ZZZs every night. Less sleep means a bigger waistline over time.
