Healthy Starts

We've heard it time and time again.  "I don't have time for breakfast".  We are all pressed for time.  Whether you have a house full of kids, a stressful job, lots of hobbies or a dirty house to clean- we understand that time is limited.  But, breakfast still is THE most important meal of the day.For starters, it improves your mood by fueling your brain.  And let's face it, no one likes "cranky" around the house or office setting.  Secondly, it boosts your metabolism, so it helps manage weight.  And, we've yet to meet many folks that are truly satisfied with that number on the scale.  Thirdly, it improves focus, which enhances learning and productivity. So, no more excuses!  Below are a few grab and go items that may take a teeny weeny bit of your time to prepare, but if you're sitting in front of the TV or computer for even 10 minutes a day, you can spare 5 minutes to make breakfast.

  1. PB and J on whole wheat.  This can be made ahead of time and needs no refrigeration.  You can eat it at home, in the car or once you get to the office.  Try natural peanut butter- less saturated fat, sodium and sugar than traditional stuff.  Don't pour off the oil.  Store your PB upside down after stirring.
  2. Low sugar instant oatmeal.  Yeah, we realize it's August – so you may want to have this one come December.  But, the fiber will keep you feeling full til lunch.
  3. String cheese and crackers.  Portable, packed with protein and simple.  Go for cheese made with skim or 2% milk and crackers with at least 2-3 grams of fiber per serving (Wheat Thins or Triscuits for example).
  4. Yogurt with nuts or low fat granola.  We're fans of the Greek stuff since it tends to be lower in sugar and higher in protein.  Any dry cereal can be added to give it a little crunch.  Add some seasonal fruit (like berries) to boot!
  5. Egg sandwich on a whole wheat English muffin.  You can scramble an egg in a microwave in about a minute.  Fold it over, add a sprinkle of cheese or salsa and place it on a toasted English muffin.  VOILA.  You have just made a delicious breakfast sandwich!
