Dark chocolate rules
This Valentine's Day, take care of your sweetheart by getting him or her dark, not milk chocolate. Dark chocolate has so many more health benefits. Here's just a few:1. Dark chocolate is lower in saturated (solid) fat such as palm or coconut oil than milk chocolate. It's also lower in sugar than milk chocolate.2. Dark chocolate contains more flavonols- antioxidants that protect again cognitive decline- including dementia, stroke and depression.3. Dark chocolate helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Keep the serving to one ounce, which provides ~170 calories and 12 grams of fat. Look for 70% or higher cocoa content.4. Cocoa is also an excellent source of antioxidants. If you're watching your calorie or fat intake, opt for hot cocoa in place of chocolate candy for the same antioxidant benefits.5. Pair dark chocolate with berries or wine this holiday. Berries are lower in sugar than other fruit and contain high amounts of disease-fighting antioxidants such as anthocyanin and phenolic acid. Strawberries are also an excellent source of vitamin C.
